A unique feature of road races, sports, cultural and other competitive events organized by the Foundation University Institute of Youth Sports for Peace (FU-IYSPeace) since 2006, is the use of rice, instead of cash, as prize awarded to the winners and participants. This practice is adopted by the University as one of its various institutional corporate social responsibility (CSR) to create awareness of the need to conserve rice and in support of the Asia Rice Foundation “Rice is Life” and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) “Save Rice. Final preparations are being reviewed to ensure the smooth holding of the first-ever Dumaguete Adventure Marathon at 5:30 a.m. this coming Sunday, Nov. 22.
Dr. Aparicio Mequi, director of the Institute of Youth Spots for Peace (IYSPeace) at Foundation University, which is spearheading this event, said many runners from other parts of the country have already signified their intention to run on Sunday, which will bring the number of runners at about 3,000.
“This promises to be a fun event,” Mequi said in a final briefing before teachers and administrators of Foundation University last Friday.
Excerpts from THE STARTING BLOKE by Dr. Aparicio Mequi
Friday, October 30th, 2009“Meanwhile, online registration in the Dumaguete Adventure Marathon, the biggest sports tourism event in Negros Oriental, and scheduled on Nov 22 as part of the City’s fiesta celebration, presents an interesting development. The number of registered runners, with still three weeks to go, shows that most of the early birds are out-of-towners, with Cebu having the most number with 12, followed by Bacolod with 11, Dumaguete with 3, Makati City with 2, and one from each of the following cities: Mandaue, Sta. Maria, Butuan, San Juan, Lapu-Lapu, Iloilo, San Carlos, Parañaque, Cavite, Bago, Talisay, Toldedo, Dapitan, and Pasig”.

350 Trees Series
Race-for-Trees is an eco-tourism initiative for nature appreciation toward preservation – we intend to expose every person involve this event, the participants, the volunteers, officials and the community to the scenery of the countryside route to develop our sense of accountability to Mother Earth.
Every runner, walker or sponsor who will register in the series will fund one (1) native tree to be raised and will be counted to accomplish 350 trees to be planted this year. Individual Bib Race numbers will be printed from 001 to 350 representing the 350 trees – a doable effort to stabilize atmospheric CO2.
Let us plant a tree and make your run count, run the series!
